Festive Crafts With The Kids

Simple and stylish Christmas wreath craft for little ones.

Many a time I have swooned over the stylish toys that Acorn & Pip offer for little ones, in fact I must admit that I almost want that wooden laptop for myself! So when Lucy asked me to write a guest post on Christmas crafts, I knew that the usual Pritt stick and glitter wasn’t going to cut it.
This year I have been delighted that my two little boys (age 4 & 6) are keen to join in with my creative faffing, and so I’ve made it my mission to come up with some simple, stylish and affordable ideas for things we can make together that will look beautiful in our home this Christmas season.
I’m running some Christmas wreath workshops at the moment and my boys have been very inquisitive when they’ve seen me fiddling around with all sorts of interesting tools and materials. In fact, they wanted in on the wreath making action too, so I came up with this fun take on a Christmas wreath.
To make your own pinecone wreath you’ll need:

Pinecones (we used ones we already had that we foraged in the Autumn, but you can find them in the shops with the other Christmas decorations)
PVA glue
A glue gun (again we had one already but you can pick them up cheaply in craft stores or you could just try PVA glue and give it time to dry)
Glitter
Paper plate
Wool/twine

We started by dipping the tops of the pinecones in PVA glue and then into glitter. This was definitely the fun part for my little ones.

Leave to dry.
Cut the middle section out of your paper plate.

Once the glue and glitter on the pinecones is dry, glue the pinecones around the paper plate. I used the hot glue gun for this but you could try PVA and just give it plenty of setting time. With the glue gun it dries almost instantly.
Once everything is dry, its time to hang your wreath. The pinecones are obviously quite heavy as opposed to the paper plate so to support it all I lopped my wool around the outside of all the pinecones (in a big circle) before trying it together at the top to hang.

I love the end result as it’s simple and stylish (I couldn’t resist adding a bow!) and my boys love that they have their own wreath to hang on their bedroom door.
