Half Term in Huddersfield: Things to Do with Kids (October 2026)
October half term always sneaks up on me. One minute we're buying school shoes, the next it's a full week at home with two boys and the light disappearing by teatime. Over the years I've built up a list of what actually works round here, so I thought I'd share it.
Kirklees schools break up for half term from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026 (academies set their own dates, so double-check with your school). Here's how I'd fill it.
Make something at Acorn & Pip
We run small, relaxed sessions in the shop in Slaithwaite, and half term is one of our busiest weeks:
- Little Bakers biscuit workshops: Tuesday 27 October (autumn) and Friday 30 October (Halloween), 9.30–10.30am. £6.50 per child, and they take home a box of their own decorated biscuits.
- Little Dreamers Club: Wednesday 28 October, 10–11.30am.
Spaces are small on purpose, so book ahead. Afterwards, Juno is right next door for a hot chocolate.
Free days out (bring wellies)
- The canal towpath in Slaithwaite. Flat, buggy-friendly and full of ducks, locks and narrowboats. Walk a stretch towards Marsden and back for an easy morning.
- Tunnel End, Marsden. The entrance to the Standedge Tunnel, the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain. Kids find it properly impressive, and there are lovely walks from there onto the moor.
- Marsden Moor. The National Trust looks after miles of moorland here. Pick a short loop, take snacks and let them run.
- Greenhead Park, Huddersfield. Big play area, space to scoot and a café. A reliable half-day.
- Castle Hill, Almondbury. A short, steep climb with huge views across Huddersfield. Little legs feel very proud at the top.
Autumn walks are better with a mission: collect five different leaves, spot three dogs or find the biggest conker. It turns "how much further?" into "wait, there's another one!"
Museums and libraries
Tolson Museum in Almondbury and Bagshaw Museum in Batley are free and often put on half-term family activities. Kirklees Libraries usually run themed craft and story sessions over the holidays too. Check their websites for this year's dates before you go, as sessions tend to book up.
A little further afield
- Whistlestop Valley in Clayton West: narrow-gauge steam trains, outdoor play and seasonal events. A brilliant one for train-mad toddlers.
- The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway runs through proper Railway Children country. Older kids love it.
For the rainy days
This is Yorkshire, so plan for at least one washout. Huddersfield has indoor options for every age, from soft play for under-fives to climbing and bouldering walls and laser tag for bigger ones. At home, I keep a "rainy day box" back for half term: a new craft kit, a fresh pack of pens and a book they haven't seen yet. It's amazing how much time a new thing buys you.
If you need ideas, my 12 easy Halloween crafts are all doable at the kitchen table, and our crafting collection is full of things to keep them busy.
Pace yourself
My biggest lesson after ten years of half terms: don't plan every day. One outing, one home day, repeat. Tired children don't need another activity. They need a duvet, a film and somebody to read to them.
Your questions
When is October half term 2026 in Kirklees?
Kirklees community schools are off from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026. Academies and faith schools can set their own dates, so check your school's calendar.
What can you do with kids in Huddersfield when it's raining?
Soft play for under-fives, climbing and bouldering walls, laser tag and swimming are all good indoor options in Huddersfield. Kirklees Libraries and the free local museums also run half-term activities. A craft or baking session at home is the cheapest win of all.
Are there free things to do with kids near Slaithwaite?
Yes, lots. The canal towpath, Tunnel End in Marsden, Marsden Moor, Greenhead Park and Castle Hill are all free. Bring wellies and a snack and you've got a morning sorted.
See you in the shop,
Lucy x
